Despite the mix critics, the movie became a blockbuster. In 2013, had a IMAX re-release, and in 2015, the US Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry.
The sequel, TOP GUN: MAVERICK, starring againTom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, was released in May 27th, 2022, and became the second-highesr grossing film of that year.
